Mediation makes the process of divorce smoother for parents and children

Mediation makes the process of divorce smoother for parents and children

Divorce is never easy, but when there are children involved, it makes the whole process so much more complex. In addition to all the usual details to work through, divorcing parents need to develop a plan to meet their children’s needs. This can be extremely difficult in the face of strong emotions such as anger, hurt, fear, and frustration.

Mediation helps parents communicate and focus on developing a plan to meet their children’s needs. Better communication leads to better agreements. Mediation provides a way for parents to work on these agreements together with a neutral third party, the mediator.

What is a mediator?

Mediators are specially trained lawyers or mental health professionals who help parents communicate clearly and focus on the issues that need to be agreed upon for the future vs focusing on issues from the past. Mediators help develop parenting plans that are reasonable and acceptable to everyone involved. Mediators do not make decisions for the family, offer legal advice, or provide therapy. Instead, they help parents make decisions together that are in the children's best interests. You cannot be forced to agree to terms discussed in mediation.
