ORIGINAL ARTICLE: A snowstorm that was expected to hit the northern Chicago suburbs earlier Tuesday apparently got a late start. And the conditions Tuesday afternoon are leading to some crashes in Lake and McHenry counties.
In Cary, the westbound lanes of Route 14 near the Chase Bank have been closed Tuesday afternoon following a crash, according to the Northwest Herald. Meanwhile, in Lake County, paramedics were called to an accident with injuries after a car collided with a tree at Hawthorn Elementary South, 430 Aspen Drive in Vernon Hills, according to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner reports Facebook page. Another driver was injured earlier in the day after colliding head on with a tree on Route 176 west of Barreville Road in Prairie Grove, according to the Northwest Herald.
Mainly sleet and freezing rain hit the Chicago area, with some snow to the north, during the Tuesday morning commute, leading to slippery roadways, and following a brief morning break, the snow was expected to pick up again this afternoon, the Chicago Tribune reports. ABC7 Meteorologist Tracy Butler said the snowy conditions should let up by the evening commute.
In McHenry County, an additional inch of snow is expected Tuesday, the Northwest Herald reports. That coupled with high wind gusts of up to 30 mph could reduce visibility on area roadways.
The Illinois Department of Transportation Winter Road conditions map, which was last updated at 11:06 a.m., showed roadways in Lake and McHenry counties had patches of ice and snow.
