Explore With Your Family As Nature Detectives

Learn about winter survival in Glacial Park and learn how to build a beaver lodge!

From McHenry County: It's a beautiful day for hiking, bird watching, and wildlife tracking! Start your Lost Valley Nature Detective adventure at Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park, Rt. 31 and Harts Rd., Ringwood. Indoor displays and activities will get you ready for an outdoor exploration and each month features a new topic. Check out the free exploration backpack to borrow binoculars and field guides and grab a scavenger hunt to help you search the wild spaces of Glacial Park.

December’s topic is — Winter Survival. Learn different ways animals survive the winter. Play a puppet sorting game, take a winter fur test, and watch for birds at the feeders. Take a short hike and look for signs of animals still out in the cold. Come back inside to build your very own beaver lodge!
Topics change monthly: January — Animal Tracks; February — Coyotes
Week day or weekend, morning or afternoon, stop by the Lost Valley Visitor Center, open daily, 9 a.m.– 4 p.m., closed December 24–26 and Dec. 31–Jan. 2. Visitors who wish to borrow items to take out for a hike must leave a drivers’ license and must return items 30 minutes before closing.
