While serving in Afghanistan in 2011, Snyder was permanently blinded after stepping on an improvised explosive device (IED). The explosion took his eyesight, but not his tenacity and fierce competitive spirit. He used this setback to springboard to his next achievement, winning his first Gold Medal on September 7, 2012 – the one year anniversary of his injury, and going on to become a five-time Gold Medalist and two-time Silver Medalist at the London and Rio Paralympic Games.
