Hawk Visits Our Lady of Peace School
Staff member Edd Bockman brought his beautiful red tailed hawk to visit with the second grade students at Our Lady of Peace School in Darien
When he's not busy making sure all the technology is running smoothly at Our Lady of Peace school, staff member Edd Bockman spends his time training and taking care of his beautiful birds of prey.
The second grade classes have been learning all about bald eagles recently. They have studied them both as animals and as symbols of our country. Mr. Bockman was kind enough to bring in one of his birds for a visit -- a beautiful red tailed hawk named Kenai.
The students were treated to a presentation and learned all about different species of eagles and hawks, how and what they eat, and they even got to hear a recording of a bald eagle call. The learning continued when Mr. Bockman took Kenai out of his -- or her! -- cage. Mr. Bockman explained to the children that he wasn't quite sure if Kenai was a boy or a girl, but he was leaning toward it being a girl.

Kenai first came out of the cage wearing a hood, but it was removed shortly after so the second grade was able to see the hawk's fabulous eyes. The children were also treated to a show of Kenai's wingspan when she stretched her wings. The students were so grateful for such an interesting learning experience which will surely be remembered for years to come!
