Deerfield Native Named Education Fellow At Ohio Wesleyan
The Deerfield High School grad was awarded a 4-year fellowship for students interested in teaching who have a high potential for success.

DEERFIELD, IL — A first-year college student from Deerfield has been awarded a four-year fellowship from Ohio Wesleyan University to study early childhood education. The fellowships are awarded each fall to university freshmen who have shown an interest in teaching at the primary or secondary level to students that have demonstrated leadership in high school and a passion to improve society through education, according to the university.
Ruthie Silberman was one of 16 students named 2018-19 education fellows by Ohio Wesleyan's department of education, according to the Delaware, Ohio-based university. Fellows receive a scholarship from the university, mentoring from professors and upper-level education fellows and invitations to career events like forums and field trips. Silberman is pursuing a teaching certification in early childhood education.
Ohio Wesleyan said it offers majors in early childhood, middle childhood, special education and integrated science for teachers, as well as minors in adolescent to young adult education, for middle and high school students, and in multi-age education for students in grades K-12. More specialization is available in English language arts, mathematics, world languages, music, visual art, social studies and drama, according to the university.
