Minors with E-Cigarettes Will Now Face Penalties

Governor signs into law proposal by Deerfield Democrat to ban possession of nicotine-related products.

Minors in Illinois who possess e-cigarettes and other nicotine related products will now face penalties when caught with them.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law on Friday a proposal introduced by State Senator Julie Morrison, D-Deerfield last year that imposes the same penalties on juveniles who possess the products as the ones who are caught purchasing them.

“Current Illinois law prohibits the selling of these products to kids,” Morrison said. “It only makes sense that they should also be prohibited from being in their possession.”

Penalties for a first violation are $25 or 15 hours of community service and fines of up to $100 and up to 30 hours of community service for repeat offenders.
