Rep. Brad Schneider Wants Answers After Derailment

North Shore Congressman calls for a "thorough" and "transparent" investigation into Lake Forest derailment.

LAKE FOREST, IL — Congressman Brad Schneider has sent a letter to the Federal Railroad Administration asking for a thorough, transparent and timely investigation into Wednesday's train derailment in Lake Forest.

In a letter to the FRA executive director dated Thursday, Schneider points out most of the derailed cars were carrying hazardous material, and he asked "to clarify the type of cars that derailed, specifically, whether or not the cars have been or are on schedule to be retrofitted" as a result of a 2015 rule.

That law calls for fixing or replacing tank cars carrying Class 3 materials, but the train that derailed in Lake Forest was carrying a Class 4 material, a FRA spokesperson told the Tribune.
