Des Plaines Park District Celebrates completion of Lake Opeka Shoreline Restoration Project

The Des Plaines Park District today held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Lake Opeka Shoreline Restoration Project. This vital initiative, which addresses years of erosion and aims to improve water quality and ecological health, was made possible with significant support from State Senator Laura Murphy and State Representative Marty Moylan.

Executive Director Don Miletic and the Park District Board of Directors were joined by Senator Murphy, Mayor Andrew Goczkowski, City Manager Dorothy Wisniewski, Aldermen from the city, Jackie Kaiser from State Representative Mussen's office, Maria Galo from County Board Commissioner Maggie Trevor's office, and Justin Koziatek from County Commissioner Kevin Morrison’s office, highlighting broad community and governmental collaboration.

The project sustainably repurposed existing materials to reinforce the shoreline and incorporated native aquatic plants, transforming the shoreline to enhance its beauty, filter pollutants, and provide essential habitat. This restoration offers improved access and revitalized recreational experiences for residents and visitors, securing Lake Opeka as a thriving natural hub for future generations.
