History Center to examine anti-war book

Book discussion group to meet Wednesday, September 16, from 6-7 p.m. at Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson Street.

Copies of Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut are now available at the readers services desk at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Street. The book will be discussed at the Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson Street, Wednesday, September 16, from 6-7 p.m. Adults and high school students are welcome.

Slaughterhouse-Five has been considered one of the world’s great anti-war books as well as one of the 100 best novels of all time. It centers on the infamous fire-bombing of Dresden in 1945. Vonnegut is known for his dark humor, satiric voice, and incomparable imagination.

The History Center has been hosting various programs and events related to World War II in honor of the 70th anniversary of the end of the war. This is the fifth war-themed book to be discussed since January. So pick up a copy and join the conversation, which will be facilitated by History Center curator Philip Mohr. Call 847-391-5399 to register. This event is co-sponsored by the History Center and the Des Plaines Public Library.
