Park District Celebrates Lake Opeka Shoreline Restoration Award at IPRA Conference

Lake Opeka Shoreline Restoration Project Receives IPRA Outstanding Park Award Des Plaines, IL

(Des Plaines Park District)

The Des Plaines Park District is proud to share that the Lake Opeka Shoreline Restoration Project has received the Outstanding Park Award from the Illinois Park and Recreation Association.

The award recognizes outstanding achievements in the planning, design, and development of park spaces. Lake Opeka was honored for its thoughtful shoreline restoration using native plants and natural solutions to reduce erosion, improve water quality, and restore habitat, all while keeping the lake open and accessible for fishing, walking, and quiet enjoyment.

Community input played a key role in shaping the project, which was designed with long-term sustainability in mind. As the native vegetation continues to grow and take hold, the shoreline will naturally strengthen over time, supporting both a healthier ecosystem and a better experience for park visitors.

“This recognition reflects the care and collaboration from staff and the Park Board that went into restoring Lake Opeka,” said Don Miletic, Executive Director of the Des Plaines Park District. “Lake Opeka and Lake Park provide inclusive recreation for the entire community, and this project ensures the lake remains a welcoming, resilient space for everyone now and into the future. We would like to thank Stantec for the amazing architectural planning and consulting, and Semper Fi for their work in reinforcing the shoreline, creating fishing areas, access pathways, landscaping, and aquatic plantings.” A special thank you to Senator Murphy, an advocate of the Parks, and former state representative Marty Moylan for assisting in obtaining Build Illinois Funds to pay for this project that also alleviates flooding in the area.

The Lake Opeka Shoreline Restoration Project highlights the Park District’s continued commitment to environmental stewardship and to creating high-quality park spaces that enhance quality of life while protecting natural resources.
