Man Charged In Armed Carjacking At BP In Downers Grove

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — A Chicago man faces felony charges after he was accused of pulling a gun and demanding a woman's keys and cellphone at a BP gas station in Downers Grove. Demario Butler, 30, was charged with armed robbery with a firearm and attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm in connection with the Sept. 30 incident.

Police say Butler and another person approached a woman's car around 1:19 p.m. on Sept. 30 while she was parked at the BP gas station at 4314 Main St. Butler is accused of coming to the driver's side of the car and holding a black handgun next to his face with the barrel pointed upward.

According to DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, Butler demanded the woman's keys and cellphone, at which time she gave him her cellphone and ran inside the store. Butler is accused of getting into the driver's seat of the car. Police say Butler and the other person were unable to start the car, so they got out of the vehicle.

Butler is accused of then walking in the direction of the victim before fleeing toward Ogden Avenue. He was taken into custody Oct. 22 at his home.

“We will not stand idly by and allow the residents of DuPage County to be terrorized by violent crime, as alleged in this case,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

Berlin added, “Make no mistake, anyone who commits a violent crime in DuPage County will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Butler is currently being held at DuPage County Jail with bond set at $500,000. He is set to appear in court again Nov. 22.
