In the spring of 1990 a 22-year-old Charlie Mosbrook left Cleveland with a roll of quarters, a copy of Woody Guthrie’s “Bound for Glory”, and guitar hitching a few rides into Chicago. His final ride dropped him at State and Goethe before he descended into the Clark and Division CTA station, opened his case and earned enough money to rent a cheap hotel room. During the next couple of years, he would continue to make the train platforms his stage in the afternoon and area open mics like the No Exit in Rogers park at night. After returning to Cleveland, Charlie began hosting a popular series of open mics and taking a great leadership role in the local folk music scene. He has performed the music of Woody Guthrie at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, voted Cleveland’s Best Singer-songwriter, and his music has been featured on FolkAlley.com. His CD Something to Believe was chosen by Rich Warren of WFMT’s Midnight Special for CD of the week in 2015. As an folk music advocate, Charlie is President of Folknet (Northeast Ohio’s Folk and traditional Dance Organization) and Workshop Coordinator for FARM(Folk Alliance Region Midwest).
On May 5th, Charlie returns to the Chicago area for a concert at the Two-Way Street Coffeehouse in Downers Grove for a concert to celebrate the release of his 12the recording “Hear Me Callin’: A Collection of American Folk Songs”. The music on this album explores some of the songs that originally drew him to folk music including two by Woody Guthrie. The concert will also feature many of Charlie’s original songs and quirky humor.
