Man Pleads Guilty to Murder, Sex Assault in Stabbing Death of Ex-Girlfriend

Adam Belmont stabbed his ex-girlfriend in the heart and sexually assaulted her in 2012 in her Woodridge apartment, officials say.

A Northlake man entered a blind plea of guilty to first degree murder Monday for the stabbing death of his former girlfriend in Woodridge.

Adam Belmont, age 26, also entered a blind plea of guilty to aggravated criminal sexual assault, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Woodridge police found Alyssa Van Meter dead Dec. 15, 2012, on the bedroom floor of her apartment on Forest Drive. She had been stabbed once in the heart.

A Woodridge Police Department investigation concluded that Belmont broke into her apartment by climbing the outside balcony and entering through a window.

Belmont and Van Meter had a physical fight in the apartment, and Belmont choked Van Meter, the state’s attorney’s office reports. He then stabbed her and sexually assaulted her before he left the apartment.

He was arrested later that evening without incident.

Belmont faces a penalty between 20 and 60 years served at 100 percent in the Illinois Department of Corrections on the murder charge and between six and 30 years served at 85 percent on the sexual assault charge, according to the state’s attorney’s office. The sentences will be served consecutively.

Belmont’s next court date is scheduled for June 15, and his sentencing date is June 23.

“This afternoon, Adam Belmont took sole responsibility for the murder of Alyssa Van Meter,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin in a statement. “While his admission of guilt in this horrific case will not bring Alyssa back to those who loved her and miss her, perhaps it will help them begin to gain some measure of closure in this horrible chapter of their lives.”
