Sewing Saints Stitch Pillowcases for Cancer Patients Every Third Tuesday
Sewing enthusiasts gather monthly at Friendly Stitches Sew & Vac in Downers Grove to contribute to non-profit ConKerr Cancer.

For more than a year, Friendly Stitches Sew & Vac in Downers Grove has hosted a special group of people who only sew one thing every third Tuesday of the month — pillowcases.
The pillowcase-making is part of the non-profit organization ConKerr Cancer, which has provided more than 950,000 pillowcases to children with cancer around the country through its Case for Smiles program, according to the ConKerr Cancer website.

The Downers Grove chapter meets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. once a month at Friendly Stitches Sew & Vac (2135 63rd St.). Participants bring their own sewing machines, according to the Friendly Stitches newsletter.
Ellyn Nicodem, co-owner of Friendly Stitches, told mySuburbanLife.com that she and business partner pastor Jon Hoekema began hosting the charity sewing group as a way to do God’s work and give back to the community.

Participants only need a desire to sew, a machine and thread to help out, according to mySuburbanLife.com, and some contributors can help by ironing fabric, folding or pinning.
