Community Corner

Today was really a good day

Written by Nathan Robinson

While Kathy Nazzarini has worked with Hope’s Front Door (HFD) for more than a year, the organization welcomes her as its new Program Director. She mentioned recently how there is an emotional and mental toll with seeing so many people in need and hearing their heart breaking stories. In providing services to the community, HFD has been honored to share in the up and downs of our neighbors in need. She reflected on one day in June at HFD that perfectly highlights the impact of the good work being done and the lives being touched.

The day started out on a high not when the volunteer staff received some great news about a few of their clients gaining a “step up” in their lives. Keith, a young veteran who has worked through issues due to being in combat (PSTD) and homelessness, came in sharing some good news. Elated, Keith told how he received a job at the Hines Veteran Administration and has been given housing.

“He was so thrilled,” Kathy said. “We’ve seen him struggle for a while, helping him with transportation to get to medical appointments and job interviews, and all of a sudden something really good has come together.”

That day also saw a young woman with two small children who was looking for resources while leaving an abusive relationship. HFD, who partners with a local abuse shelter, was able to provide assistance with transportation out of the state, away from a living situation that was dangerous for the woman and her children. In addition, food vouchers were provided to help them on their journey so that the family could reach their new beginning.

When Brenda, a job seeker, came in to meet with a Pathway’s to Employment job’s coach she was worried. She was not confident she was doing the right things to find employment. After discussing her job search strategies and conducting a resume building exercise, the HFD job coach assured Brenda she was on the right track and also gave her additional tips. Brenda left the office eager to put in action the advice given. “The job coach gave me ideas on other things I could be doing, or even stop gap measures until I get the job that I really want.”

These stories are uplifting for an office that works hard each and every day to help bring stability and reassurance to the lives of members of the community who have faced some setbacks. “The work being done by Hope’s Front Door is so rewarding,” Kathy explains. “The bottom line is these are all people, and the greatest gift we can give anyone who walks through this door is treating them like they are a human being, they aren’t less because they are in an unfortunate circumstance.”

This message is what HFD brings to the DuPage County community. They feel rejuvenated as clients begin steps to improve their lives. Hope’s Front Door recognizes that as a community we are Stronger Together. In order for us to continue to have these types of really good days, volunteers and community partnerships are needed.
