Typing Education Makes a Comeback
Schools rediscover the value of teaching typing for students' success in the digital age!
In today’s digital age, where technology is at the forefront of nearly every aspect of our lives, it might come as a surprise that many students still struggle with a basic, yet essential skill: typing on a physical keyboard. Despite being the most tech-savvy generation, many fall short when it comes to typing proficiency, a skill once taught as a standard part of education. In 2000, nearly half of high school graduates had completed a keyboarding course, according to data from the U.S. Department of Education. By 2019, that number had dropped dramatically to just 2.5 percent.
However, change is underway. Erin Cummings, a sales executive at Typing.com, notes that
hundreds of schools throughout the Chicagoland area are using the platform to teach students proper typing techniques. Educators have expressed that while today’s students are highly skilled in using smartphones and tablets, those abilities do not necessarily translate to efficiently navigating a computer.
“Many schools across the country are recognizing the need to prioritize typing education, with a significant rise in demand from parents, teachers and administrators alike,” Cummings explains. “Nearly all states in the US are now using online computer-based standardized state testing. When students don’t have to focus on the logistics of typing during a timed assessment, they
perform better on their tests. School officials have come to understand this connection and are reinstating typing education in classrooms.”

Typing.com has become a key resource for schools aiming to boost students' typing proficiency and improve academic performance. “Teachers are satisfied with the ease of use and find the
grade-based curriculum simple to incorporate into instruction,” Cummings says. “They also report students genuinely enjoy learning on Typing.com and celebrating wins as they improve. Students remain highly engaged with the curriculum and games offered throughout the school year.”
Since 2022, Typing.com has seen an average of 240% growth in schools implementing the Typing.com PLUS program each year.

The revival of typing education has even sparked curiosity about whether other once-forgotten skills, such as cursive writing, could follow suit. Only time will tell—but it’s clear that typing instruction is making a comeback.
