14U Cougar Ladies Second Out of 24 Teams in Glenview USSSA Qualifier

Following up Championship wins and national tournament qualifications in Roselle and Downers Grove the 14U Cougars Softball team took the second place prize on June 22nd at the Glenview USSSA Thunderbolt Tournament.

The 2014 Glenview Thunderbolt 14U tournament was played over the weekend of June 20th – 23rd at the beautiful Community Park West in Glenview, Illinois.  The 14U Elmhurst Cougars fast-pitch team was one of twenty-four teams from Illinois and Wisconsin in the tournament.  The competition was sanctioned by the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) as a World Series qualifier.  The Glenview Titans were the host organization and the tournament was classified as “open”; meaning registered USSSA A, B, and C class organizations were welcomed to compete.  The Elmhurst Cougars, a USSSA B team, tallied 6 wins in the tournament.

The Cougars completed pool play in the tournament a perfect 3 and 0, and they had the largest differential between runs scored and runs allowed of any team.  The Cougars opened with a 13-0 shutout of the Park Ridge Pistols, followed by a 12 – 3 victory over the Northbrook Spartans, and a 17 – 2 slaughter of the Oak Park Falcons.

Sunday’s single elimination bracket play required 3 wins to get to the championship game.  A 10 – 5 defeat of the Libertyville Cats, 11 – 5 victory over the host Glenview Titans, and semi-final 11 – 3 victory over the Lake County Comets put the Cougars in the championship game.  The finals featured the Cougars taking on the USSSA A-class Northern Ice; a pitchers dual ensued with the Cougars losing 1 – 0.  The Ice got their single run on a nicely executed bunt squeeze play early in the game.
