200 New Virus Cases In Elmhurst Since Start Of July

City sees an 8 percent increase in its virus caseload in the last week, figures show.

ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst has seen 41 new coronavirus cases in the last week, or a nearly 8 percent increase, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 566 cases. Since the beginning of July, Elmhurst's caseload has grown by more than 200.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had seen 43 coronavirus-related deaths so far, according to the health department. That's two more than a week earlier.

Nursing homes are often hotbeds for the coronavirus, but those numbers have only increased slightly in recent weeks. In Elmhurst, The Grove of Elmhurst reported 97 cases as of Friday, up by nine from a week earlier, according to the state Department of Public Health. It was followed by 42 at Artis Senior Living and 17 at Lexington of Elmhurst. The total coronavirus deaths are 20 at Artis, 12 at Lexington and 11 at The Grove.

The case numbers at nursing homes include employees, who may live elsewhere and thus excluded from Elmhurst's overall number.

In DuPage County, Addison has the highest number of cases with 960, which works out to 26.3 per thousand. It is followed by West Chicago, with 916 cases, or 34.2 per thousand. Despite the high caseloads, both towns have seen relatively few deaths — 9 in Addison and 12 in West Chicago.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 12.1 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 9.2 in Darien, 9.8 in Western Springs, 10.2 in La Grange Park, 12.2 in Clarendon Hills, 13.2 in DuPage County, 15.6 in Hinsdale, 16.9 in Burr Ridge, 17.8 in suburban Cook County and 20.2 in La Grange.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 194,080, up 7 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 7,636 state residents.

Nationally, 5 million people have caught the virus, up 8 percent from the week before. A total of 161,284 people have died from the virus in the United States.

Meanwhile, Elmhurst Hospital's coronavirus caseload dropped by six in the last week to seven. In the early weeks of the pandemic, the number hovered around 60.

In the last week, the hospital reported four more deaths as a result of the coronavirus. That brings the total to 82.

Since March 24, 481 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
