Big Drop In Virus Patients At Elmhurst Hospital

Elmhurst sees a 10 percent rise in coronavirus cases in the last week, according to the county.

ELMHURST, IL — In the last week, Elmhurst Hospital has seen a 25 percent drop in the number of coronavirus patients it is treating, according to the latest numbers.

As of Sunday, the hospital was caring for 46 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. That is down from 64 a week earlier. Monday's number is the lowest since late October.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 127 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is up by three from a week ago.

Since March, 1,089 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.

Meanwhile, Elmhurst saw a 10 percent rise in coronavirus cases in the last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had seen 2,674 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up by 239. That's roughly the same percentage hike as nearby towns, including Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills.

Over the last two months, Elmhurst's total cases have increased by nearly three times. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable.

As of Sunday, coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst since the pandemic's beginning stood at 51, which has not changed in two weeks.

Elmhurst's rate of increase of 10 percent was the same as DuPage County's hike in the last week. Elmhurst makes up 5 percent of the county's population and 5 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 57.2 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 43.7 in La Grange Park, 48.6 in Darien, 50.1 in Hinsdale, 50.3 in Western Springs, 56.3 in Clarendon Hills, 57.4 in DuPage County, 61.8 in suburban Cook County, 62.5 in Burr Ridge and 67.9 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).
