District 205 Athlete Tests Positive For Virus

The sport is being canceled until further notice, school says

ELMHURST, IL — Sandburg Middle School informed parents of cross country team members late last week that one of the runners tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. Cross country has been canceled until further notice.

Elmhurst Patch obtained messages given to parents Thursday and Saturday. The Saturday message reviewed by Patch was sent to those families with runners who were not believed to have had close contact with the person testing positive. The statement, the school said, was being sent as a precaution.

In the message, the school said Elmhurst School District 205 is working with the DuPage County Health Department to conduct contact tracing. Meanwhile, the school is asking parents to monitor their children for symptoms of the coronavirus.

"The case is believed to be linked to a non-school event; no other exposures have been reported," District 205 spokeswoman Beverly Redmond said in an email to Patch late Monday afternoon.

Over the last week, Elmhurst has seen the biggest increase in coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to health department numbers.
