Elmhurst Closes In On 2,000 Mark For Virus Cases

City's per capita number for coronavirus cases the same as DuPage County's.

ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst saw 274 more coronavirus cases in the last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department. That represented a 16 percent increase.

At the same time, the rate of increase last week was 11 percent in Hinsdale, 12 percent in Burr Ridge, 13 percent in Western Springs, 16 percent in La Grange and 17 percent in Darien.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had seen 1,943 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic. It is likely to pass the 2,000 mark within the next few days.

Since the beginning of October, Elmhurst's total cases have more than doubled. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable.

As of Sunday, coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst since the pandemic's beginning increased by two in the last week to 50.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 41.6 coronavirus cases per thousand people, the same as the county's per capita number. The figure compares to 32.9 in La Grange Park, 35.2 in Darien, 36.4 in Western Springs, 38 in Hinsdale, 38.6 in Clarendon Hills, 41.6 in DuPage County, 46.3 in suburban Cook County, 47 in Burr Ridge and 50.4 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 656,298, up 14.4 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 11,056 state residents.

Nationally, 12 million people have caught the virus, up 11.1 percent from the week before. A total of 255,076 people have died from the virus in the United States.

On Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was treating 74 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. Monday's number was more than three times the level a month ago. The hospital reached a record 84 coronavirus patients last Tuesday.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 112 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is up by two from a week ago.

Since March 24, 896 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
