Elmhurst Hospital Virus Caseload Stable For Month

Elmhurst sees 19 percent increase in coronavirus cases among residents in last week.

ELMHURST, IL — For more than a month, Elmhurst Hospital has had about the same number of coronavirus patients — about 60. As of Monday, the number was 58. Since the pandemic began, 47 have died at the hospital from the virus, according to the latest report.

Since March 24, 266 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital after treatment for confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

According to the DuPage County Health Department, Elmhurst had 193 confirmed cases of the coronavirus as of Sunday. This is up from 162 a week earlier, a 19 percent increase. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.

While Elmhurst has a hospital in its boundaries, that would not explain the number of cases in town. Coronavirus patients are counted at the place of their residence, not at the hospital where they are admitted, according to the state Department of Public Health.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst has 4.1 coronavirus cases per thousand residents, less than DuPage County's rate of 6.4. The rates are 2.5 in Western Springs, 4 in Clarendon Hills, 4.3 in Darien, 4.6 in La Grange Park, 6.9 in Burr Ridge, 9.4 in La Grange and 9.6 in Hinsdale.

In DuPage County, Addison is leading the pack with 541 cases as of Sunday, or 14.7 cases per thousand. West Chicago follows with 521, or 19.3 cases per thousand.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 94,191, up 21 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 4,177 state residents. Health departments do not provide the number of deaths by municipality.

Nationally, 1.5 million people have caught the virus, and 89,923 have died from it.
