Elmhurst Hospital Virus Caseload Still Dropping

Three more coronavirus deaths are reported at the hospital in the last week.

ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst Hospital is continuing to see a decline in the number of patients being treated for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. As of Monday, the hospital had 43 coronavirus patients, down from 48 a week earlier. Before that, the number had been hovering around 60 for more than six weeks.

In the last week, the hospital reported three more deaths as the result of the coronavirus. That brings the total so far to 51.

Since March 24, 310 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital after treatment of confirmed coronavirus cases, according to the hospital. Elmhurst's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst's number of coronavirus cases edged up 6 percent to 229, up from 217 a week earlier, according to figures from the DuPage County Department of Public Health. The last two weeks' rates of increase were 12 percent and 19 percent.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 4.9 coronavirus cases per thousand people. That compares to 3.1 in Western Springs, 4.9 in Clarendon Hills, 5.2 in Darien, 5.8 in La Grange Park, 8 in Burr Ridge, 8.4 in DuPage County, 10.3 in Hinsdale and 11.4 in La Grange.

In DuPage County, Addison is leading the pack with 731 cases, or 20 per thousand, according to the health department. West Chicago follows with 708 cases, or 26.4 per thousand.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 120,260, up 9 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 5,390 state residents.

Nationally, 1.8 million people have caught the virus and 106,198 have died from it.
