Elmhurst Sees Lowest Rate Of Increase In Virus Cases

Elmhurst compares well to nearby towns, government figures show.

ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst's number of coronavirus cases edged up 12 percent to 217 in the last week, up from 193 a week earlier, according to Sunday's figures from the DuPage County Health Department. That's Elmhurst's lowest rate of increase since the pandemic began. The previous week's rate was 19 percent.

While Elmhurst has a hospital in its boundaries, that would not explain the number of cases in town. Coronavirus patients are counted at the place of their residence, not at the hospital where they are admitted, according to the state Department of Public Health.

Elmhurst compares relatively well to nearby towns with its rate of coronavirus cases. As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 4.6 cases per thousand people. The rates are 2.9 in Western Springs, 4.5 in Clarendon Hills, 4.9 in Darien, 5.3 in La Grange Park, 6.5 in Burr Ridge, 7.7 in DuPage County, 10 in Hinsdale and 10.5 in La Grange.

In DuPage County, Addison is leading the pack with 667 cases, or 18.3 per thousand, according to the health department. West Chicago follows with 652 cases, or 24.3 per thousand.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 110,304, up 17 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 4,856 state residents. Health departments do not provide the number of deaths by municipality.

Nationally, 1.7 million people have caught the virus, and 98,035 have died from it.
