Elmhurst Virus Cases Up 16% In Last Week

City sees more than 100 more cases in the last two weeks. Other nearby towns also experiencing spikes.

ELMHURST, IL — Over the last two weeks, Elmhurst has seen more than 100 new coronavirus cases. As of Sunday, the local caseload was 402, up from 348 a week earlier, according to the DuPage County Health Department. That's a 16 percent increase, down from the previous week's 18 percent.

Illinois as a whole is seeing spikes in cases, as are nearby suburbs such as Hinsdale and Western Springs.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had seen 37 coronavirus-related deaths, according to the health department.

Nursing homes are often hotbeds for the coronavirus. In Elmhurst, The Grove of Elmhurst reported 76 cases as of Friday, up from 47 a week earlier. It was followed by 42 at Artis Senior Living, 17 at Lexington of Elmhurst and 2 at Park Place of Elmhurst. The coronavirus deaths are 19 at Artis, 11 at Lexington, 6 at The Grove and none at Park Place.

The case numbers at nursing homes include employees, who may live elsewhere and thus excluded in Elmhurst's overall number.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 8.6 coronavirus cases per thousand people. That compares to 6.2 in Western Springs, 6.8 in Darien, 7 in Clarendon Hills, 7.4 in La Grange Park, 10.5 in DuPage County, 10.9 in Burr Ridge, 12.5 in Hinsdale, 14.8 in La Grange and 15.2 in suburban Cook County.

In DuPage County, Addison is leading the pack with 857 cases, or 23.5 per thousand, according to the health department. West Chicago follows with 809 cases, or 30.2 per thousand. Addison and West Chicago have recorded nine and 14 coronavirus-related deaths, respectively.

Meanwhile, Elmhurst Hospital's coronavirus caseload increased by three in the last week, to 18. In the early weeks of the pandemic, the number hovered around 60.

In the last week, the hospital reported one more death as a result of the coronavirus. That brings the total to 70.

Since March 24, 421 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
