Teatro Leyden debuts El Espiritu de Hispania
District 212's Teatro Leyden presents El Espiritu de Hispania (Spirit of Hispania), staged in Spanish and English.

Adapted for the stage by playwright Jules Tasco, the play examines familiar themes about love, greed, tragedy, good vs. evil, and wishful thinking – all disclosed through cultural folklore including Maria, The Baker’s Neighbor, The Crying Woman, Repaying Good with Evil and The Rabbit Who Wanted To Be a Man. The cast and crew features students from both campuses.
El Espiritu de Hispania will be presented in Spanish on May 3 and May 11 at 7 p.m., and on May 5 at noon. The English language version is set for May 4 and May 10 at 7 p.m., and May 5 at 4 p.m. The production is in the auditorium at West Leyden High School, 1000 N. Wolf Rd., Northlake.

Teatro Leyden, District 212’s bilingual approach to a high school theater program, was one of three programs honored as a Magna Awards 2018 Grand Prize winner. Sponsored by the National School Boards Association (NSBA), the Magna Awards Program recognizes school districts that use original, inventive methods to promote an increase in student participation and achievement.
