Traffic to Shift on Western Segment of Illinois Route 390

Traffic will also shift on Interstate-290 for construction.

Traffic shifts will begin the week of March 23 on the western segment of Illinois Route 390 and on Interstate-290, according to the Illinois Tollway.

The traffic shifts are scheduled to be completed in parts over several weeks between Lake Street (U.S. Route 20) and Interstate-290.

  • Between Lake Street and Irving Park Road, eastbound traffic will be routed through multiple shifts in traffic to the left and to the right to accommodate electrical work. Westbound traffic will be shifted to the right for pavement construction.
  • Between Irving Park Road and Wright Boulevard, traffic in both directions will be shifted to the right.
  • Between Wright Boulevard and Plum Grove Road, traffic in both directions will be shifted to the left.
  • Between Plum Grove Road and Meacham Road/Medinah Road, there are no traffic shifts planned.
  • Between Meacham Road/Medinah Road and Rohlwing Road, westbound traffic will be shifted to the left.

The shifts will create a work zone for this year’s construction on the Illinois Route 390 Project, which is part of the $3.4 billion Elgin O’Hare Western Access.

Work will also shift traffic on Interstate-290 beginning this week for construction of bridge piers, according to the Illinois Tollway.

  • Eastbound I-290 traffic between Biesterfield Road and Devon Avenue will be shifted to the left.
  • Eastbound traffic between Devon Avenue and Irving Park Road will be shifted to the right.
  • Westbound I-290 traffic between Irving Park Road to Devon Avenue will be shifted to the right.

“The Illinois Tollway is committed to maintaining access to local roads and interchanges and providing the same number of lanes for drivers during construction as we work to complete improvements on the first segment of Illinois Route 390,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur in a statement. “By the end of this year, drivers will have a newly reconstructed roadway with improved access to and from I-290.”

Traffic-shifting work will take place overnight and during off-peak hours, and it depends on weather. During overnight lane closures on Illinois Route 390, workers will install glare screens, complete pavement striping and shift traffic. Up to one lane may be closed nightly. Lane reductions should be gone by 5 a.m. on weekdays before the morning rush

Drivers should slow down in construction zones, whether or not workers are present, watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution.
