Virus Hospitalizations Double In Elmhurst In Last Couple Of Weeks

Elmhurst Hospital hasn't seen these levels since early June, according to its reports.

ELMHURST, IL — The number of hospitalizations has more than doubled from two weeks before at Elmhurst Hospital, according to the hospital's latest numbers. This represents a trend across the country.

As of Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was treating 39 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. The hospital hasn't seen this many coronavirus patients since early June.

A week ago, the hospital reported it had 22 COVID-19 patients. Two weeks ago, it had 16. In the early weeks of the pandemic, the number hovered around 60.

According to the hospital, 93 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. That number has remained unchanged for three weeks.

Since March 24, 630 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst has seen 1,168 coronavirus cases since the pandemic's beginning, up 69 from a week before, or a 6 percent increase.

As of Sunday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst numbered 47, the same it has been for weeks.

Elmhurst is one of seven DuPage County towns with more than 1,000 cases — Naperville (1,695), Addison (1,601), West Chicago (1,375), Glendale Heights (1,245), Carol Stream (1,214) and Lombard (1,102).

Nursing homes are often hotbeds for the coronavirus, but those numbers have barely budged statewide in recent months. The Grove of Elmhurst, Lexington and Artis suffered outbreaks in the first months of the pandemic, but they have since been contained.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 25 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 18.7 in La Grange Park, 19.1 in Darien, 21 in Western Springs, 23.3 in Clarendon Hills, 24.1 in DuPage County, 25.9 in Hinsdale, 29 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands), 29.4 in suburban Cook County and 29.5 in Burr Ridge.
