Virus Hospitalizations In Elmhurst Up By Third

Elmhurst Hospital hasn't seen levels like this since May, according to its reports.

ELMHURST, IL — The number of coronavirus patients at Elmhurst Hospital is up by a third over the last week. The hospital hasn't seen numbers like this since May.

As of Monday, the hospital reported that 52 people were hospitalized because of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. That is up from 39 a week before. In the early weeks of the pandemic, the number hovered around 60.

According to the hospital, 96 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. That number is up by three from a week ago.

Since March 24, 672 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst has seen 1,235 coronavirus cases since the pandemic's beginning, up 67 from a week before, or a 6 percent increase.

As of Sunday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst numbered 47, the same it has been for weeks.

Nursing homes are often hotbeds for the coronavirus, but those numbers have barely budged statewide in recent months. The Grove of Elmhurst, Lexington and Artis suffered outbreaks in the first months of the pandemic, but they have since been contained.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 26.4 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 19.5 in La Grange Park, 20.7 in Darien, 22.2 in Western Springs, 25 in Clarendon Hills, 26 in DuPage County, 27 in Hinsdale, 29.1 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands), 31 in suburban Cook County and 31.8 in Burr Ridge.
