Drunk, Wanted Parolee Fled Police, Crashed With Baby In SUV: Cops

He's been charged with felony fleeing and endangering the life of a child, along with numerous other crimes.

EVANSTON, IL — A drunk Chicago parolee with an active arrest warrant and a baby in his SUV ended up crashing into several other cars after he tried to flee police Friday, police said. Cops noticed his SUV run a stop sign at Foster Street and Ashland Avenue around 8:20 p.m., and as soon as they turned to pursue it, it sped off, quickly making two right turns before speeding away southbound on Green Bay Road, according to Evanston Police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan.

A few minutes later, officers came across a five-car traffic crash involving the fleeing SUV at the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Church Street. Its driver appeared to be trying to walk away from the scene, leaving behind a 29-year-old woman and a 1-year-old girl in the car, police said.

Xavier L. Frye, 29, of the 1500 block of West Birchwood Avenue, Chicago, was arrested and charged with felony aggravated fleeing and eluding, driving under the influence of alcohol, endangering the life of a child, driving while license suspended, reckless driving, driving with suspended registration, and numerous traffic tickets. Police said one of the drivers who he side-swiped while fleeing police pointed him out to arriving officers, who detained him and noticed he smelled of alcohol, slurred his words and had bloodshot and glassy eyes.

Police also found an open bottle of beer and cups that looks like they had alcohol inside. Paramedics arrived to check on everyone involved in the crash, but no one was taken to hospital.

The first of the four other drivers Frye crashed into while he was reportedly drunkenly fleeing from cops left the scene before police arrived, Dugan said.

Frye is also awaiting trial on felony drug charges in connection with his arrest in March. In that case, police said he was witnessed conducting a hand to hand drug transaction in front of an apartment about 50 feet from Evanston Township High School just as police arrived with a warrant to search it.

At the time of his more recent arrest Nov. 10 Frye also had an arrest warrant connected to a charge of driving on a suspended license. Plus, he was on parole for a 2013 conviction of aggravated domestic battery, so the Illinois Department of Correction also filed an arrest warrant for a parole violation, Dugan said.
