Lead Levels Shut Down 11 Water Fountains In Evanston

Lead contamination at some of the 59 public drinking fountains tested by the City of Evanston exceeded EPA action levels.

EVANSTON, IL — Lead levels in 11 water fountains at public parks in Evanston tested above the action levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency have been shut down. The city recently completed testing on 59 drinking fountains to determine how many dispense water containing more than 15 parts per billion of lead.

All other park water fountains tested below 15 ppb and are back in service, Evanston officials announced Wednesday. City staff said they plan to bring a report to City Council on Monday, June 26 detailing plans for the 11 fountains. This year's budget already contains some funding for drinking fountain replacement.

Water fountains at Independence Park and Harper Park remained turned off because plans to replace them were already underway, according to a spokesman for the city manager's office. Those locations have not yet been sampled, as testing will wait for final installation to be complete.
