Last week, state public health officials announced Illinois' first human case of West Nile virus was detected in Will County. A 67-year-old Crete resident was diagnosed with the virus in June, which can lead to encephalitis or meningitis and sometimes death.

While the current risk of infection is low, virus activity is projected to increase over coming weeks, the district said. It reminded residents to eliminate any items from their property that might be holding standing water, as it can provide fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes.
