City eyes $16M in park improvements (evanstonnow.com) — Evanston is weighing more than $16 million in park and recreation upgrades next year, with the biggest share going to a major Mason Park expansion and new nature trail. City staff say a new strategy of whole-park renovations and ADA fixes is improving safety and accessibility, but warn the sharply higher funding levels may be hard to sustain.

Upcoming Conferences: Department of Mathematics (northwestern.edu) — Northwestern University will host a high-level mathematics conference in Evanston from August 31 to September 4, bringing leading researchers in ergodic theory, symbolic dynamics, and combinatorics to town. NU volleyball is ready to put Coach Tim Nollan's vision to the test (dailynorthwestern.com) — Northwestern volleyball is banking on a large freshman class and Coach Tim Nollan's long-term recruiting vision to elevate the Wildcats in the Big Ten, all while juggling demanding academics in Evanston. Players describe a deeper, more versatile roster, a scrappy defensive identity, and ambitions to return to the NCAA Tournament and someday bring a national championship home to Evanston.

4. Trial set for Evanston man charged with animal cruelty, torture (evanstonnow.com) — A jury trial is set for Oct. 5 for an Evanston man charged with multiple felony counts of animal torture and aggravated cruelty involving his poodle and poodle-mix dogs. Prosecutors allege the animals suffered pain and health problems from having their mouths zip tied, while the defense argues there was no intent to torture. All of the dogs have since been rehabilitated and adopted from a suburban rescue.
