Prosecutors say Horton misused district funds and failed to report illicit gains, and he now faces a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years on the most serious count.

Neighbors top D65 in Niche ratings (evanstonnow.com) — Evanston/Skokie District 65 just earned an overall A- from Niche, but that puts it only in a three-way tie for 11th among nearby North Shore elementary districts. Still, District 65 scored solid marks for teachers, diversity and academics, while Evanston Township High School landed an impressive 15th place statewide among Illinois public high schools.

Proposed city budget includes 8.9% property tax levy hike, mostly for parks (dailynorthwestern.com) — Evanston's newly released 2027 budget proposal would raise the property tax levy 8.9%, with most of that money going to parks and recreation, costing the median homeowner about $180 more a year. The plan also hikes taxes on streaming, rideshares, natural gas, high-value real estate transfers, water, and garbage, and will be debated by the Finance and Budget Committee before a November City Council vote.
