Registered Sex Predator Handed 1-Year Sentence for Being in School Zone

"Just knowing that he won't be able to harm children for the next several months is a relief to me," alderman says.

EVERGREEN PARK, IL -- A registered sex offender who attended an Evergreen Park parish carnival in 2015 was sentenced to one year in the Illinois Department of Corrections for violating his sex offender registration.

Donald Leib, 46, of the 10320 S. Albany Ave., in Mt. Greenwood, was convicted in December during a bench trial on a charge of “prohibited presence within a school zone by a child sex offender.”

A neighbor familiar with Leib’s background as a sex offender spotted him at the Queen of Martyrs parish carnival on Sept. 26, 2015 and notified police. Leib was arrested a few days later.

>>> Predatory Perv Convicted of Lurking Around Catholic School Carnival

Much of Leib’s bench trial before Cook County Judge Kerry Kennedy focused on his attorney showing witnesses a flier, which advertised the carnival as a “parish” event.

The Rev. Edward Mikolaczyk, pastor of Queen of Martyrs Parish which straddles in Evergreen Park, testified that monies raised from the carnival went toward the parish school.

Mikolaczyk further stated that the school and parish were synonymous.

According to state records, Leib is listed as a sexual predator with past convictions for child abduction/luring, and indecent solicitation of a child in 2008. Leib was 37 and his victim was 12 at the time of the offense.

“He was heavily admonished by Judge Kennedy,” said Ald. Matt O’Shea (19th), who attended Thursday’s sentencing hearing in Bridgeview along with 22md Police District court advocates.

“Just knowing that he won’t be able to harm children for the next several months is a relief to me,” O’Shea continued. “I’m happy with today’s outcome that Mr. Leib will remain behind bars.”

Leib has been incarcerated since his conviction in December. The days he’s spent at Cook County Jail will be applied toward his 12-month sentence.

According to the Illinois Department Financial and Professional Regulation, Leib is an Illinois licensed funeral director and embalmer. His license was revoked between Sept. 1, 2009 and March 19, 2015 “due to felony convictions and unprofessional conduct.”
