Exclusive: Patch Obtains 'Threatening' Letter Sent to Former Sheriff Paul Kaupas--It's Not Really Threatening
The letter-writer was ostensibly warning the sheriff about another man's murderous scheme.

Patch obtained a copy of the supposedly threatening letter sent to former Will County Sheriff Paul Kaupas and discovered it’s not really threatening at all.
The letter-writer never indicates he means to harm the retired lawman, and instead warns him about a murderous plot ostensibly hatched by another man.
“There is a monster that wants to destroy you,” the letter-writer told Kaupas. “He says he is going to slaughter your family and destroy you.”

The author of the anonymous 10-page letter identifies this “monster” as “Aron Land.” The Will County Sheriff’s Department employs a Sergeant named Earin Land. Department spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer declined to comment on whether Sgt. Land is a suspect in the police investigation of who sent Kaupas the letter and likewise would not comment on whether Land has been interviewed by detectives about the matter. Hoffmeyer did say the letter was taken to the Illinois State Police crime lab.
Kaupas failed to respond to questions about his relationship with Land or whether he suspects the sergeant might be plotting to do him harm.

The writer said “Aron Land” has been working on his evil plan for years and had always referred to Kaupas as “Paul hubba hubba,” and to two other targets as “Q Ball Nick” and “Uncle Marty.” Detectives believe Q Ball Nick is retired Deputy Chief Nick Ficarello, and Uncle Marty is retired Undersheriff Marty Nowak, according to sources.
Ficarello said a detective has spoken with him about the letter.
“I was talked to about it four and a half days after the report was made,” Ficarello said.
The “monster” described in the letter actually intends to kill family members of Kaupas and Ficarello, and then frame the retired cops for the murders.
“He wants to destroy you by hurting your family and make it look like you were to blame,” the letter said. “He makes very grand statements (about) having gathered personal evidence over many many years so he can have proof of your being to blame for your families (sic) death.”
But the letter also says the plotter wants the deaths to appear accidental, which doesn’t really fit into his frame-job theme.
“He says he can make anything look like an accident,” the letter said. “He says he can burn down anything and burn up anyone so it looks like it was natural.”
The letter-writer claims to be from a foreign country and to have gone without formal education after he “grew up in what you call a charity home.” He also insists he is “risking everything” by writing to Kaupas about the plot.
“I am very fearful of this monster Aron Land,” the letter said. “When you look into his eyes you can see he is evil.”
