Firefighter Injured in Batavia Apartment Blaze

Fire officials determined the blaze was caused by discarded smoking materials on a third floor balcony in the apartment complex.

One firefighter was injured early Monday in an apartment fire in Batavia.

Firefighters were called to 934 Lorlyn Circle at 2:45 a.m. Monday for a report of a fire and black smoke coming from the roof of an apartment complex, according to a Batavia Fire Department press release.

When the fire department arrived, crews found smoke on all three floors of the apartment building and visible fire and smoke at the roof line and third floor balcony in the rear of the building.

A smoke detector in a third floor apartment alerted occupants of smoke and the occupant also noticed a fire on the balcony, according to the news release.

Fire officials determined the blaze was caused by discarded smoking materials on the third floor balcony. The blaze caused an estimated $75,000 in damage.
