Geneva City Council to Vote on $12.5 Million Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrades

The city council is set to vote on Tuesday.

GENEVA, IL - The Geneva City Council is set to vote Tuesday to move forward with securing the funds to pay for $12.5 million in improvements for its sewage treatment plant.

The work at the plant needs to be done to improve the plant’s ability to remove phosphorus after the federal government set in place rules years ago, which limits the amount of phosphorus that can be in treated water that is sent back into rivers, lakes and streams, according to the Daily Herald.

The city would apply for a loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, according to the article. If passed, voters would have 30 days to get a backdoor referendum on the ballot, questioning whether the city should borrow the money.
Money to repay the loan, which would be paid over 20 years, would come out of what the city charges its water and sewer customers, according to the Daily Herald.
