Start Of East State Street Reconstruction Project On The Horizon In Geneva

Drivers should expect "substantial" lane closures through late 2027, city officials warn.

GENEVA, IL — After months of underground utility relocations on East State Street, the Illinois Department of Transportation is preparing to begin its transformation of the corridor, Geneva officials said Thursday.

The scope of the multi-year project is to rebuild the highway from Glengarry Drive to the Fox River. Improvements include new street lighting, sidewalks, roadway widening to incorporate a shared left turn lane throughout the corridor, new trees, bike lanes, streetscape enhancements, traffic signal upgrades, and water main and storm drainage infrastructure improvements.

Work will begin in mid-March with the installation of a new sanitary sewer main down the center of the state route. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction from Route 25 to Nebraska Street. IDOT's contractor is expected to establish a new traffic pattern the week of March 16, with construction kicking off the following week, according to a news release.

Considered the "pre-stage phase," the sanitary sewer main installation is anticipated to be completed by May.

Construction will typically take place from 7 a.m. to the end of the work day Monday through Saturday, with some occasional evening work. Drivers should expect "substantial" lane closures, officials said.
