Wear Orange Sept. 6 to Show Support for Hunger Awareness

If you see a lot of people wearing orange today, it's not necessarily that they're fans of Syracuse or the Fighting Illini.

And, yes, it's 8 a.m. as this is posted, but if you haven't left the house yet, see if you can find something orange in your wardrobe.

That's because on Thursday, Sept. 6, in Geneva and 200 Feeding America food banks across the country are asking the public to “Go Orange” to generate awareness of the issue of hunger in our community. 

Wear orange to work, encourage a conversation about hunger, post your thoughts on what hunger means to you and pictures of you wearing orange on Northern Illinois Food Bank’s Facebook page.  

In Northern Illinois, one in eight people faces hunger. Northern Illinois Food Bank, a nonprofit organization and member of Feeding America, provides nutritious food to more than 60,000 hungry neighbors each week through a network of 700 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and youth and senior feeding programs in 13 counties.

During the month of September, businesses, including Hotel Arista in Naperville and Santa’s Village in East Dundee, are turning their building lights orange for the month. Other businesses will post messages on their marquees for Hunger Action Month. Many restaurants across the region have dedicated special days where proceeds will benefit the food bank, and dozens of food drives, including the Jewel-Osco “give a little, feed a lot” campaign, are being held. Northern Illinois FoodBank will also host two free cooking demonstrations at its West Suburban Center in Geneva.
