Western Avenue Student Council Students Talk About American Education Week

Western Avenue School's student council members attend the District 304 leadership breakfast, talk to the regional superintendent of schools and give their opinions about what Amercian Education Week is all about.

Three student council members from Western Avenue School had a remarkable morning Wednesday, participating in the District 304 leadership breakfast, talking to their principal, Ron Zeman, and having a long conversation with Kane County Regional School Superintendent Douglas E. Johnson.

Student council president Megan Fee and student council representatives Alice Hong and Claudia Wilkie, all fifth-graders at Western Avenue School, were bright, articulate and on their toes Wednesday morning. They had to be, because they were peppered with questions from the big brass of local education as well as the little brass local media.

Are these kids bright and funny and wonderful representatives of Geneva schools? You decide.

So, Megan Fee, what does American Education Week mean to you?

"Well, American Education Week for me is a celebration of education, and I think it's very important that every student have a right to be educated and receive a quality education," she said.

How did you get to be student council president?

"I ran for student council, made a speech and was chosen to be representative," she explained. "And then I made another speech to be president, and I was voted in by the rest of the student council."

Claudia Wilkie, we saw you having a nice chat with Regional School Superintendent Douglas E. Johnson. What did you think of him?

"He's nice," she said. "He said that when he was a principal, when teachers had a birthday, he would let them take the day off, and he would teach the class. And I think that would be fun."

And Ms. Wong, what did you like best about the Leadership Breakfast?

"Well," she said, "I liked the bacon."

No, but seriously, what did you learn today?

"I learned that there are a lot more donations than I thought there were, and when I grow up, I hope I can participate in that way, too."

And your thoughts on American Education Week?

"To me it means students gathering all their talents, sharing their talents, communicating with each other and learning in school," she said.

Not too shabby an answer, that.
