Glen Ellyn 4th of July Committee announces Parade Grand Marshals
2018 Glen Ellyn Parade Grand Marshals: James Bourke and Jim Rasins
The 2018 Glen Ellyn 4th of July Parade Grand Marshals: James Bourke & Jim Rasins
In memory of James Bourke, long time faithful member of Glen Ellyn 4th of July Committee. When Jim was just a lad, his family would come to celebrate the 4th of July in Glen Ellyn. That began a lifelong interest in the 4th of July. Later, after serving in the Navy, that interest would become a dream fulfilled when he began working on the 4th of July Committee with the Jaycees.
Jim had a strong love of his community. He was a member of the Jaycees, the Kiwanis, the Village Zoning Board of Appeals and a Village Trustee. Later, he was a teacher at Hadley Jr. High and active in the Hadley RC Club until last year.

In 1978, The Jaycees turned the 4th of July committee over to the community. Naturally, Jim joined and had many roles over the years, including Chairman. But, the role he relished the most was that of Fireworks Chairman. Those fireworks that delight us all, also delighted him.
Most people don’t think about how the fireworks got here- just that they were spectacular. But, for some of us, the fireworks and Jim Bourke are synonymous.

Jim Rasins
In memory of Jim Rasins, former Chairman and longtime Treasurer of the Glen Ellyn Fourth of July Committee.
Jim served the Committee for over 30 years, and spent countless hours every year so residents would enjoy a great Independence Day celebration. Over his tenure, he served in every capacity including Chairman. During some lean years he held the committee together through sheer will and determination. Jim was the driving force behind the Cardboard Boat Regatta over 25 years ago which is still a huge success today. His financial acumen as our long serving Treasurer provided stability and a template for the committee for years to come.
Jim mentored other committee members, always striving to make each year just a little better than before. Jim was a devoted husband and father, and blended his love of family with his role on the committee. His wife Barbara and their family would often be “called to duty” to walk the parade in various capacities, or sell glow sticks at the fireworks or serve food at the picnic in the park. Jim was the DuPage County Auditor and was well known for his professionalism and high ethical standards. Some of his other interests included teaching at College of DuPage and Elgin Community College, refereeing high school football, Kiwanis, Jaycees, volunteering at PADS and of course, bass guitar.
Jim Rasins was a dear friend to many and his community involvement, distinctive laugh, red, white, and blue wardrobe and friendship will be missed.
