GLEN ELLYN, IL — The village of Glen Ellyn is one of 26 communities in northern Illinois to be awarded an environmental grant from ComEd and Openlands. The one-time $10,000 grant will be used at Maryknoll Park, according to a news release.

This year's round of grants focused on protecting pollinator species and increasing pollinator plants. With that in mind, the Maryknoll Park project will convert turf at the park into a pollinator prairie. It will also be used to add pollinator plants to expand a garden near the park's entrance.

The grants come by way of ComEd's Green Region Program. Established in 2013, the Green Region Program has awarded more than $1.5 million throughout northern Illinois to fund various open-space projects and restore and protect land.

ComEd vice president of governmental and external affairs, Melissa Washington, said in a statement, "Every year, the Green Region Program reminds us of the power of investment in local environmental projects to provide customers and communities with their own, unique green spaces. With each grant, ComEd, alongside Openlands, helps ensure the enhancement of green space and biodiversity, while creating a lasting impact in the communities we’re so privileged to serve.”
