Redevelopment Closes Newton Skate Park Temporarily
Crews will perform demolitions, improve the asphalt and install additional skate ramps in the coming months.
GLEN ELLYN, IL — Newton Skate Park is closed as crews perform demolitions and prepare to improve the asphalt and install new skate ramps throughout the park.
The closure, which took effect Wednesday, will allow workers to upgrade the asphalt with a color coating that is designed to keep temperatures at a cooler level. This asphalt work will take place in September, according to an update from Glen Ellyn Park District Superintendent of Planning and Natural Resources Nathan Troia.
The skate park will reopen temporarily after the asphalt work, but no ramps will be in place, Troia explained. Crews are set to begin installing new skate ramps in a process that is expected to last a few weeks. Troia said the park district hopes to begin this step of the redevelopment sooner, if possible.

The improvements to Newton Skate Park come after a public meeting was held in April to get feedback from residents. In June, designers provided a concept plan for the park improvements. The skate park redevelopments are funded in part by a $400,000 grant from the Illinois Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development program.
