17-Year-Old Glenview Girl Fatally Shot

A Glenbrook South student was shot in the head early Saturday morning in unincorporated Des Plaines.

GLENVIEW, IL — A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot early Saturday in unincorporated Cook County between Glenview and Des Plaines. Angelique "Angie" Morris, of Glenview, was shot around 1 a.m. in the 9900 block of Linda Lane, according to a spokesperson for the Cook County Sheriff's office.

She was taken to Lutheran General Hospital and pronounced dead around 4 a.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide Sunday. Cook County Sheriff's police have begun an investigation into the shooting. No one is currently in custody, althought three people were taken in for questioning and later released. Morris' death was described as accidental on a GoFundMe page for funeral expenses. Morris, heading into her senior year at Glenbrook South High School with dreams of becoming a teacher, was shot in the head in a basement apartment while with a friend, her family members told WLS.

Morris changed her cell phone number on the night of her death, explaining to family members she had been being harassed. According to her older sister, there was a 17-year-old who may have been Angie's boyfriend or fighting with her (or both) at the party that night.

Morris called her mother around 10 p.m. to pick her up from a party in the basement apartment, but later changed her mind and texted her mother back within about a half-hour to say she wished to stay, her sister told the Journal & Topics.

Family and friends held a candlelight vigil in her memory outside her Glenview apartment building Sunday night.

"She didn't like you? She'll tell you. She loves you? She'll show it. She was amazing," her older sister told the Daily Herald.

Morris was the youngest of several siblings who enjoyed spending time with her two nieces and two nephews, her sister told the paper. She worked as a tutor at Glenbrook South and at Funtopia, a kids entertainment center in Glenview, and planned to attend Oakton Community College before transferring to a four-year university.

Glenbrook South Principal Lauren Fagel said in an email to parents Sunday that Morris was planning on graduating in January and pursuing a career in early childhood education. According to the Chicago Tribune, Fagel said counselors will be made available all this week to students at the school.

If Morris' shooting is determined to be an accident, it would be the second accidental killing of a teen with a gun in Des Plaines in two months. Fifteen-year-old Maine West freshman Izaiah Franceschi died after being shot in the face by his 10-year-old sibling in May.
