“Highwood residents should be receiving a letter now with a reference ID to fill out the census on the Internet,” says Scott Coren, City Manager. “With everyone at home during this coronavirus crisis, it is the perfect time to fill it out and get it off their to do list.”
The questionnaire takes ten minutes on average to fill out, and people are legally required to respond. It asks people to identify the name, gender, birthday and the race/ethnicity of all the property’s residents, as well as whether the respondent is the owner of the residence or if they rent.
The first round of official Census invtiations (for online responses) were delivered on our about March 15, 2020. There will be three total letters delivered to residents between March and June. The US Census Bureau will then canvas the community June-July seeking out non-responders to complete the count.
People have until April 1st to respond to the Census online or via phone, before they are sent a paper questionnaire. If the questionnaire isn’t returned, a Census Bureau Interviewer will be sent to that home to collect answers in person.
In order to receive an equitable, fair share of funding and representation, the City of Highwood wants to remind its residents the importance of being counted in 2020 as the Census impacts our most fundamental rights and ability to adequately plan for our collective future.
“When community members have information about how the Census affects their lives and the lives of their families and neighbors, they are motivated to make sure that their communities are counted,” says Mayor Charlie Pecaro. “We want to make sure every single one of our residents are counted!”
