Burglars Break Into Bicycle Shop; Fleeing Shoplifter Arrested: Blotter
Drunken driver abandons car after crashing into fire hydrant; SUV stolen outside Warren Barr: Highland Park Police Blotter

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.
INCIDENTS
JEWELRY THEFT
Various amount of jewelry were reported stolen from a home in the 1900 block of Browning Court between Feb. 5 and April 24. Police reported there were no signs of a break-in.
STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a Chevrolet SUV from outside the Warren Barr rehabilitation center, 2773 Skokie Valley Road, after it was left running with its keys and an unattended iPhone inside prior to 11:15 p.m. April 25.

BICYCLE HEIST
Two burglars wearing black hoodies, red shoes, yellow and black gloves, ski masks and bandana's broke into the Fit to Ride bicycle shop at 1440 Old Skokie Road and stole three unspecified bicycles from inside around 3:30 a.m. on April 30. The suspects showed up in a beige or silver sedan, used a crowbar to force open a back door and made off with three bikes worth a combined $18,000 in less than 60 seconds. Police said the crime fit the same pattern as other bike shop burglaries in the suburbs.
SHOPLIFTING

- Staff at the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, reported on May 5 that someone had stolen a Dyson vacuum worth $350 shortly after 9:45 p.m. on May 1.
- On May 5, Target staff reported that someone stole four Polaroid cameras and three Fujifilm cameras worth $669 and left in a white sedan around 5:15 p.m. on May 2.
- At some point on May 6, a man and a women stole six baby monitors worth nearly $1,200 from the Target and left in a white sedan. The man was in his 20s and wearing a red hat, black mask, black shirt and jeans, red shoes with white bottoms and black laces. The woman was described as heavyset with shoulder-length hair and wearing a black hat, light blue puffy coat, black leggings and tan boots with fur at the top.
CAR BURGLARIES
- Someone burglarized an unlocked Toyota SUV while it was parked in a driveway in the 1600 block of St. Johns Avenue between 9 and 11:30 a.m. on May 1. Nothing was reported stolen from within.
- Around 5:30 a.m. on May 2, two male burglars let themselves into an unlocked Mercedes in a driveway in the 3000 block of Centennial Lane. Nothing was reported stolen from inside, and the duo left in a gray SUV.
- Someone stole a pair of sunglasses from a GMC SUV that was left unlocked in the 2900 block of Parkside Drive between 6 p.m. May 1 and 7:45 p.m. on May 2.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Leon Ford, 61, of the 2200 block of Argon Drive, North Chicago, was issued a citation for theft on April 18 after police were told he stole cash and four Black & Mild cigars while working at Bucky's Mobil, 2580 Skokie Valley Road.
Melissa T. Ingman, 30, of the 200 block of Hickory Lane, Antioch, was arrested around 3:30 p.m. on April 30 and charged with driving under the influence of drugs and driving without a valid license following a traffic stop at Skokie Valley and Old Elm roads. Officers also issued her a citation for improper lane usage.
Daniel Vega Ventura, 22, of the 1100 block of West Keith Avenue, Waukegan, was arrested around 3:20 a.m. on May 1 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following a traffic stop at Skokie Valley Road and Park Avenue West. Officers also issued him citations for speeding and having expired plates.
Briscoe Johnson, 59, of the 1700 block of Natoma Drive, North Chicago, was arrested around 9:45 p.m. on May 3 shortly after police were called to the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, for a report of a shoplifting that had just occurred. Officers were told the thief had left the store in a white car. They pulled over Johnson near Skokie Valley and Half Day road, and prosecutors approved two felony counts of retail theft.
Kevin M. Rosner, 51, of the 600 block of Barberry Road, Highland Park, was arrested around 1:45 a.m. on May 7 after he drove a car into a concrete barrier while driving south heading into the Clavey Road exit ramp. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
Matthew S. Peterson, 52, of the 300 block of Hedge Run, Highland Park, was arrested around 3 a.m. on May 7 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08, obstructing a peace officer and leaving the scene of a vehicle damage accident. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash. Officers dispatched to a call about a driver who had crashed into a fire hydrant and fled the scene reported finding Peterson's car left empty at the corner of Hedge Run and Sheridan roads after it had crashed into a tree line.
