Highland Park Woman Shares Holocaust Survivor Stories

Rodi Waterman Glass narrowly avoided being sent to concentration camp while living in Amsterdam.

Rodi Waterman Glass, a 79-year-old Highland Park resident and Holocaust survivor, shared stories of life as a Jewish person in the Netherlands in the late 1930s and early 1940s during a Holocaust Remembrance ceremony at Highland Park High School last week.

It turns out Glass avoided becoming one of the millions of victims of the long-going tragedy on multiple occasions, according to an article in the Highland Park News.

One instance came in 1942 when her family was rounded up by the Germans and bound for a station in the vicinity of the camp at Westerbork. Days later while processing documents of those being held for transport, Glass’ mother recognized an officer who was a friend of her brother’s. The officer, recognizing her as well, ended up crossing the family’s name off the list of those who would be sent to the camp.

Glass also touched on how lucky she was to be able to read at the age of 4, because she wasn’t even allowed to attend school until age 9, after the conclusion of World War II.
