“We’re all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?”
— Doctor Who
On Tuesday, February 26th, 2019, Jennifer Adams Kelley, loving wife and mother, passed away at the age of 55 after a short, sharp battle with cancer.
Jennifer was born on October 11, 1963, in Des Plaines, Illinois. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University in 1985, and married Philip Henry Kelley on October 25, 1991. She shared her birthday with her daughter, Valerie, born October 11, 1996. She was preceded in death by her mother, Sallyann Adams, and her step-father, Jerry Hahn.
Jennifer served as a troop leader while Valerie was with the Girl Scouts. She helped several of the girls in her troop earn Silver Awards, served as Cookie Mom, and was Service Manager for the Evanston area for a year.

Jennifer loved “classical rock” music, and had a lifelong love of the Monkees and the Beatles. She was a fan of the TV shows “The Man from Uncle”, “The Avengers”, “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”, “The X-Files”, and was a big fan of Star Trek before it was cool, and in fact before most of its current fans were born.
While Jennifer was active in many fandoms, her favorite was Doctor Who. She worked on numerous Doctor Who conventions across the nation and became beloved by many of the celebrities from the show. Her work and contributions to Doctor Who fandom had international reach. She helped found the Federation, a club best known for its fan videos and costume troupe, and was active in other fan clubs, both in front of and behind the camera. She was a writer of fan fiction and newsletters, contributing to the Hugo award winning Chicks Dig Time Lords and the Outside In series of books. Most notably, she co-authored Red White and Who: The Story of Doctor Who in America, the definitive look at Doctor Who fandom in the USA. The forthcoming second printing will include a dedication to her, and each purchase will contribute $5 to the Cancer Research Institute listed below.
Jennifer was a skilled seamstress and long-time member of the Chicagoland Costumers Guild. She made many treasured pieces of clothing for her daughter and husband, as well as many costumes and cosplay pieces inspired by Doctor Who and other shows and movies. She entered numerous costuming competitions at conventions, and in later years organized and ran them at her favorite conventions.
Her friends have set up a Facebook group, “Remembering Jennifer Adams Kelley”
